Rise of OTT Platforms | Digital Entertainment

What Exactly Are “Over The Top” (OTT) Services?
Have you ever watched a TV show on your own terms? We’re not talking about recording a Game of Thrones episode that aired at its scheduled time to watch later from your couch. We’re talking about the expanding universe of subscription-based media services such as Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, Sling TV, and Apple TV+. These and other over-the-top (OTT) media services bypass traditional cable, broadcast, and satellite television platforms, which serve as programme controllers and schedulers, to deliver streaming media to viewers on demand via the Internet.

Most OTT services provide pre-produced entertainment (some offer access to movies and television shows dating back to the dawn of broadcasting); some provide original content; and a few even provide live programming, typically sports-related.

Why Should You Use OTT Services?

Despite the fact that they do not provide access to local news, OTT services are growing in popularity, particularly among Millennials and Gen Xers. They get their news from other sources (such as their phones), so they are more likely to forego cable TV. But it’s not just a matter of watching whatever you want when you want.

Subscribers can literally watch whatever they want, whenever they want, wherever they are, on virtually any device, thanks to OTTplatforms. OTT is accessible from any device with a network connection, such as a smartphone, laptop, tablet, PC, or gaming console.

What Are the Advantages of OTT?

The shift to mobility is perhaps the most important driver of OTT video services. Every year, the number of mobile users and the volume of data consumed on mobile devices grows exponentially. The ease of use of mobile streaming, combined with the explosion of Millennial and Gen X users, means that OTT will only grow. That is where the problem lies.

Wi-Fi is synonymous with mobility. For customers to have a pleasant experience, faster Wi-Fi speeds are required to eliminate the buffering that can occur with HD video streaming. Faster Wi-Fi speeds will improve the customer experience in homes and businesses where multiple devices are competing for wireless bandwidth on the same network.

There’s nothing wrong with going above and beyond, as long as your internet connection and Wi-Fi network provide the necessary speed and reliability.
